Patience is the key to enjoy this crab preparation. If you love crabs then you are bound to like this all-time Goan crab preparation, called Xec Xec. What makes this dish so tasty is the roasted spices which are used to make the thick and mouthwatering gravy. In today’s post, we will share with you our traditional Goan Crab Xec Xec Recipe.
Crab Xec Xec Recipe
- 6-8 crabs.
- 2 green chilies.
- 2 finely sliced onions.
- Salt to taste.
- Oil for cooking.
- 1 small ball of Tamarind ( soak in water to extract the pulp).
- 1 cup freshly grated coconut ( can use desiccated coconut too).
- Half teaspoon turmeric.
- 1’’ ginger finely chopped.
- 6 – 7 finely chopped garlic.
- 10 – 12 Kashmiri chilies.
- Cumin seeds.
- Coriander seeds.
- Fresh coriander for garnish.
- Firstly clean the crabs. Then wash them well and keep aside.
- In a pan add the grated coconut. Dry roast the same till it turns brown in colour. Keep it aside.
- Then dry roast all the dry spices on medium heat and do not burn it.
- Once roasted keep it aside in the same pan. Add the finely chopped onions and roast the same till it turns brown.
- Now in a blender or grinder add the roasted coconut along with the onions and the dry roasted spices. You will need to grind all this together with the tamarind pulp extract and water. The masala should be ground to slightly coarse and thick. Once ground keeps it aside.
- Now in a vessel, put oil and add the finely sliced onions and sauté them until they turn brown. Once brown add the crabs. Mix well and allow them to cook for 3-5 minutes on slow heat.
- Now add the ground masala to the crabs along with the green chillies. If the masala is too thick you can add a little water. Mix well, cover and cook the crabs for 15 minutes.
- Turn off the heat. Garnish it with freshly chopped coriander and serve hot with rice or bread.
