Camphor balls

Light a camphor ball and keep it near the doors and windows. Leave the area closed for around 20 minutes to half an hour. Do not enter or allow kids to enter the area. The smoke is a good repellent for mosquitoes. You can also add neem oil to 3-4 camphor balls and add the mixture into a vaporiser container, to be used as a natural mosquito repellent.

Coffee grounds

This is a simple home remedy to repel mosquitoes. Just sprinkle coffee grounds near any stagnant water, especially in plates below potted plants. The mosquito eggs will be forced to come to the surface and thus will be deprived of oxygen. This will prevent the hatching and breeding of mosquitoes.

Cover your windows with a mesh

This is one of the most easiest and practical ways of avoiding mosquitoes. This is the most effective way as it will keep mosquitoes out at night and at dawn.


Crush some garlic cloves and boil them in little water for some time. Cool down the mixture and put it in a spray bottle. Spray it all over the house. Strong garlic smell kills mosquitoes. You can also rub some garlic on your skin to avoid mosquitoes bites.

Basil leaves

Basil leaves are a very strong repellent for mosquito larvae. A small basil plant on your window will keep the mosquitoes away. Similarly you can also place mint in your balcony or in your garden or at any entry point.

Different type of oils

Different types of oils like Eucalyptus oil, Citronella Oil, Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Oil etc., are great mosquito repellents due to their strong odour. Just put it in a spray bottle and spray it in mosquitoes breeding areas. You can also apply these oils on your skin.

Neem tree

Planting a Neem tree in your garden is good for health and also helps to keep the mosquitoes away. Dried neem leaves are burned in the garden to keep the mosquitoes away.

Clove oil and Mustard oil

These two oils have a strong smell and drive away mosquitoes. Coconut oil also has strong mosquito repellent properties.

Dry Ice

Carbon dioxide which we exhale attracts mosquitoes. Dry ice emits a lot of carbon dioxide. Place dry ice in a container and keep it at all entry points. When mosquitoes are attracted towards the container, close the lid. Though it is time consuming, it is also an effective way to drive mosquitoes.

Indian Lilac oil and coconut oil

Lilac oil is a strong natural mosquito repellent and also a natural pesticide. Mix Indian lilac oil and coconut oil in the ratio of 1: 1 and spray it in your house.

Some of the other things that can keep mosquito away are listed below:

  • Use the age old effective mosquito net.
  • Keep all the doors and windows closed before it becomes dark.
  • Use the Chinese mosquito bat, which helps in killing mosquitoes by just swinging it in areas breeding mosquitoes.
  • As mosquitoes get attracted to lights, use LED lights and other yellow bug lights to attract mosquitoes.
  • Avoid stagnation of water which is the main source of breeding mosquitoes.
