Importance Of Exercise For Kids

1. Exercise is good for the heart.

We all know that exercising goes a long way in keeping the heart and body healthy. You do not need to go to an expensive gymnasium to get fit. You can exercise in the garden or in the playground. One of the best ways of exercising is to do activities such as swimming, playing tennis, running, climbing up and down the stairs or playing other simple games with your children. This helps not only in family bonding but also helps to keep the family healthy. Children enjoy these small things and it helps them to stay healthy.

2. Regular and good exercising helps in controlling weight.

Many children suffer from obesity due to a sedentary lifestyle. Excess intake of sugar and calories accumulates fat in the body. When children are physically active, the body utilizes the fats in the body thereby reducing our weight.

Regular exercising helps in preventing sugar from accumulating in the blood and this reduces the risks of the onset of diabetes.

3. Exercise and rest help to strengthen the lungs.

It is a well-known fact that exercise increases the lung capacity by helping the air to move in and out of the body. It helps the body to breathe in more oxygen while carbon dioxide and other waste gases are removed from the body. Regular exercise keeps us fit and healthy.

4. Proper exercise strengthens the bones and the physical well-being of people.

Children and adults, both need their bone structure to be strong. Physical exercises make the muscles stronger and this increases the bone density which in turn helps in making our bones stronger. Moreover, children feel energetic, active and happy by exercising. Their endurance level and stamina also increase with adequate exercise.

5. Good exercise also increases the emotional well-being of children.

Exercise helps children to vent out their excess energy in the right way. Most children feel calm and relaxed after exercising. The release of beta-endorphin and serotonin in the body helps children to relax, increase their appetite and get good sleep. There is a sense of well-being which helps them to feel better and happy.

Now let us move on to Why rest is important for children

Proper exercise and rest are both important in the all-round development of children. Children need to have a good sleeping schedule for about 8 to 9 hours daily. It is said that younger children need more sleep ranging from 10 to 11 hours. A good sleep without any disturbance will make children active and help them to concentrate better on their studies.

Good Sleep helps in removing the toxins from the body. It improves the functioning of your cells by providing nutrition to them. Cell multiplication and regeneration is more during sleeping time than while you are awake. Rest provides the opportunity for the body to redirect itself into restoration by the cleansing of toxins from the body.

Factors affecting the quality of sleep of our children –

In order to get good sleep, it is important to do the following –

  • Make the environment conducive for good sleep, such as no lights, no noise, a comfortable bed, soft pillows etc.
  • Always encourage your child to sleep with positive thoughts or songs. In my case, we sing Christian worship and prayer songs, which helps my children relax and get good sleep.
  • If children follow a good exercise regimen, they are bound to become tired and thus sleep easily. However, in case of a sedentary lifestyle, sleep will become elusive.

Finally, children need both rest and exercise in order to develop fully. As parents, we need to ensure that our children get adequate sleep and exercise. We are responsible for inculcating a healthy lifestyle in their schedule.
